Thomas A. Edison invented the phonograph,
later called a record player, in 1877! Sound is
recorded by tracing delicate, wavy lines that are
cut into the grooves of a disk or cylinder by sound
waves. Then, when a needle retraces the wavy
line, the original sound is heard. ("Groovy!"--huh?)
